- Crested Butte, Colorado
- Instructed by Mark S. Johnson, Charles Needle
Mark Johnson and Charles Needle proudly present The Wildflowers of Crested Butte.
Designated as the "Wildflower Capital of Colorado" by the State Legislature in 1989, Crested Butte is a charming mountain town nestled in a verdant valley surrounded by majestic, snow-capped mountains, cool alpine lakes, dense aspen forests, and meadows carpeted with a grand display of dazzling wildflowers. Because of its unique location - 8,885 feet high in the south central Rocky Mountains of Colorado - this century-old mining town offers brilliant botanical displays in incredible abundance each summer.
We'll be there during the annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival when a profusion of pastoral blossoms are peaking. By changing elevation, we'll discover a breathtaking variety of flowering plants - including yellow and red Columbine, Indian Paintbrush, Lupines, Fireweed and Mules Ear. Colorful Victorian houses, quaint hanging-basket wildflower displays, and historic narrow alleys with preserved false building fronts adorn the town of Crested Butte, where we'll spend time exploring and capturing images.
With a combined 15 years of teaching experience, Mark and Charles will guide you with exuberant, personalized attention both in the field and classroom, sharing creative image-making techniques that will inspire you to develop your personal vision, expand your photographic horizons, and create images previously unimaginable. In addition to field instruction, you will experience digital darkroom classroom lectures and supportive image evaluations. Field instruction emphasizes creative macro, impressionistic flower, architectural detail, and wide-angle grand scenic photography. Classroom instruction features color correction and image blending techniques. This is a digital capture and darkroom workshop which permits students to capture images at first light and begin experimenting with them in the classroom shortly thereafter.
