  1. Craig,

I enjoyed this DC, in part because I too am focusing on local area contrast (LAC) and I like the way you use LAC to enhance specific colors as opposed simply to areas of an image. Two additional comments from my own LAC work. (1) Consider modifying the mask (Refine Edge, Blur, Curves or Levels). And (2) before adjusting opacity, quickly run thru all of the Blending modes. Even if I come back to Normal and cancel any mask adjustments, it frequently helps me see the image in a different way.

For the non-photojournalists, I might consider the combination of < increasing the size of the lighthouse & moving the entire non-sky areas down so that the Lighthouse light ends up at its original position > to make the lighthouse even more the focal point of the image as well as eliminating some of the negative space along the bottom.

  2. Hi Rick,

Sorry I have been remiss in responding to your awesome comments and thoughts Rick about PS. I am really looking forward to seeing you in the fall and talking Photoshop... I am very interested to hear more about what you have been working on. I ordered the JPC DVD you suggested and will have that under the belt before the workshop. Thank you again Rick for great suggestions and for all of the generosity and support you offer to this community....Craig

  3. What fun to play along with you, enhancing this oh-so-subtle image!

Thank you for sharing such a wide variety of approaches to post-processing. You remind me that no one "method" will necessarily serve a given image, but instead to "draw" from everything I've ever learned (or am learning) as appropriate.

One thing I especially enjoy about this treatment is that the lighthouse now seems to illuminate the sky -- emphasizing the surrounding expanse.

  4. Hey Craig,

thank you for this Daily Critique!

i watched this one a few times, but i think with the photoshop work, you changed the whole mood of the picture. i don't like these changes, because the mood from the original picture was very silent to me, when you did all the adjustments it gets pretty busy. i like the idea of seeing the water and sky as a kind of negative space, which simplifies the image. when it looks that 'dull', it perfectly reflects the feeling of a cold morning at the lighthouse.
