  1. This was an excellent critique craig, probably one of your best in my opinion. The original image was nice but really came to life with the adjustments. As far as increasing the contrast int he water goes, I often find on textures like that that USM of 30px and say 30% masked for the water gives a nice injection of local contrast (similar to the clarity setting on ACR I beleive).

The shutter speed here is as you say a great compromise, I think ultra long exposures of water which render the water as if it were ice often look too flat.

  2. The usual excellence I am coming to expect from the Radiant Vista. Listening to Craig's commentary allows me to see and to think about images in ways I would not normally do.

  3. Hi Alex and Jason,

Thank you for your very kind comments. Alex thank you for the suggestion about increasing local contrast. And thanks again to Adrian for a beautiful original capture......Craig

  4. I love your critique of this photo. It is very similar to the way that I work this type of image. I just so happen to be in the throws of trying to print a real portfolio of images that are very similar to this one. When I first saw it here I though wow that looks like something I would shoot.

I've been blogging about the creation of this portfolio at: http://derekealy.com/WordPress

  5. As I was watching the first half of this critique, I was wishing I could see a histogram. So I did a screen capture, pulled it into Photoshop, and continued the video. Lo and behold, you then pulled up the Histogram. :)

Because I already had the image open in Photoshop, I played along with you during the rest of the critique -- exploring your methods, and trying variations of my own.

I very much like this approach for at least some of the Daily Critiques!

I also enjoyed the dynamic of this image leading toward the upper right. It was very interesting to see how you chose to bring out more texture in that area to reward the viewer's journey there.

  6. I also agree that this is one of your best critiques. I really enjoyed seeing the layers palette and how it complements you critique. Keep up the good work.

  7. excellent DC--i have been remiss in commenting more often but had to mention this time that i thought the approach was great--adding in the layers pallette helped me "see" some of the steps you take to always improve an image--it didnt turn the critique into a workbench but was a helpful approach. amazing that you were able to bring out texture in what i first saw as "flat". thanks as always for your ideas

  8. Hi Everybody,

Thank you for the kind words of support.... they are greatly appreciated.... Sincerely, Craig

  9. Craig,

As if your critiques could get any better, adding the details of your modifications takes it up another notch. AprilS's idea of following along is another great idea.

    Excellent.

    Thanks Craig.

    Hi Craig,

Thanks for critiquing my picture. I like to think that I am good at capturing images "out in the field" but where I am really lacking at the moment is taking those images and refining them in photoshop to real works of art. Quite often my images come out looking flat, as this original does after seeing your adjustments.

Now that I've seen what is possible with this image I'm going to have a go at replicating what you have done, as I really like it, so thanks for giving details of your process.

Thanks again, you guys are a great resource for me,

    Adrian
